J&B Blue Program (Scholastic_Gold Medal)“Creative Storytelling for Scholastic” Highlights: J&B worked with the client on a creative writing project for the Scholastic Art & Writing Contest, developing a 3,000-word short story that met the requirements of the competition. J&B worked in a three-person team for this five-step project, providing the client with two different outlines to help map out and elaborate their plot details. J&B and the client worked together to ensure that the client’s creativity and self-initiative were captured in their final draft. As the client displayed an interest in character development, dialogue, imagery, and metaphors, J&B provided the client with a series of detailed suggestions to develop their impact on the client’s story. At the end of the project, J&B and the client were satisfied with the final draft. The Topic:J&B collaborated with the client on a creative writing project for the Scholastic Art & Writing Contest. The client’s project was exploratory and thematic, expressing the client’s goals of approaching the project with a unique narrative. J&B worked with the client to produce a 3,000-word short story that developed the client’s creative voice as a storyteller. The Process:J&B worked in a three-person team over a series of five steps to complete the project. J&B began the project by providing the client with an open-ended outline, which the client adapted to build the first draft of their story. J&B then provided another, more detailed outline for the client which they used as a map to elaborate their project’s plot points. J&B and the client worked together to polish a series of final drafts, paying close attention to tone, dialogue, dramatic effect, and transitions. J&B also assisted the client in carefully adapting the length of their story to meet the Scholastic Art & Writing requirements. Writing Style:As the client displayed strong creative initiative throughout the project, J&B worked with them to maintain their project’s focus and strong character development. The client also expressed an interest in creating dramatic plot reveals, which J&B helped the client achieve with a series of detailed suggestions regarding timing, foreshadowing, and key details. Throughout the project, the client paid close attention to the “bigger picture” of their story, using J&B’s guidance to achieve their final goals. J&B worked closely with the client on dialogue, imagery, and metaphors offering feedback to strengthen their impact on the client’s story. J&B and the client were mutually satisfied with the client’s final draft. J&B’s Key Goals: Creative storytelling Structural guidance Dramatic effect Constructive criticism Evaluation: Strengths: The client presented a clear, detailed outline and strong direction for their short story to go in. The client effectively used small details to develop and flesh out their characters. The story contained a powerful metaphor that is unique to their story. The client was able to transition from mini-chapter to mini-chapter logically throughout the story. The client paid close attention to vocabulary and used strong language for dramatic effect. Weaknesses: The client displayed some difficulties writing complete sections of their story throughout the J&B editing process. For future projects, we recommend splitting each task into 3-4 mini-sections (completed on 3-4 separate days), so that the writing process becomes less intimidating. Moreover, the client used tenses throughout the story somewhat inconsistently. We recommend reading and re-reading as the client writes.
