Overview
Founded in 1923, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is a highly renowned contest that encourages teenagers across the nation to expand their creative voices. With its emphasis on originality, finesse, and authenticity, Scholastic allows young writers to explore the extent of their creativity, and express their compelling personal vision in written form. Notable recipients of Scholastic achievement awards include Sylvia Plath, Stephen King, and Lena Dunham. By participating in the Scholastic contest, you have the opportunity to celebrate your creativity, as well.
Scholastic writers ages 13 and up can enter into writing categories that include: Critical Essay, Dramatic Script, Journalism, Personal Essay & Memoir, Poetry, Science Fiction & Fantasy, and Short Story, among others. The categories welcome a wide range of word limits, often between 500 and 3,000 words, allowing writers to decide on a length that suits their specific piece best. Whether you are tackling immigration in America, a dystopian future, or an everyday interaction at school, Scholastic welcomes it all—your challenge is not to decide what to write about, but rather how you want to manifest a subject, topic, or theme that inspires you.
J&B works with young writers to challenge and support their creative sides. Becoming a well-rounded writer isn’t just about tackling different topics; the J&B consulting team believes that creativity can come in many forms—whether as a memoir or science fiction story, the J&B team works closely with writers to guide and finesse their imaginations.
